A Standard Framework and Guide to BS 1192

BIP 2207 provides a standard framework and comprehensive guide to BS 1192. It looks at best practice methods for the development, organisation and management of production information – such as architectural drawings, engineering drawings and computer-aided designs – for the construction industry. Through a detailed explanation of the processes and procedures needed to improve the quality of production information, this book helps designers to better prepare their designs and graphics before the construction team takes over.

BS 1192 applies to the data organisation, preparation, and use of information throughout the project lifecycle and the supply chain. So anyone specifying or referencing BS 1192 in the construction industry would find this book is a great reference tool. Some of the topics covered are the roles and responsibilities of those producing production information, the Common Data Environment and standard methods and procedures.

This work has been assisted by the Department of Business, Innovation and Skills (BIS).

2011 saw an important shift towards the adoption of BIM when the Government announced that fully collaborative 3D BIM would be a minimum requirement on public sector contracts by 2016. The Government took this step to save public money because an estimated 20% of the costs of a typical construction product arise from inefficiencies. BIM will substantially reduce this waste. Since Government contracts represent around 40% by value of all UK construction projects, this requirement will lead to a more rapid, widespread adoption of BIM.

A more detailed report of the measures taken to ensure a comprehensive programme of standards and guidance documents where achieved can be found in the Construction Standards Annual Report 2011. As a result many construction firms are gaining experience with these new tools and processes and changing their expectations fromuniversity graduates. As many construction programs strive to deliver curriculum and research that is relevant to the industry, it is essential to accurately understand the impact of BIM on the operations and practice of construction companies. Accordingly, this study benchmarks the current status of BIM implementations, organizational structures, training requirements, and strategies of construction companies and examines their expectations from university construction graduates in regard to BIM knowledge and skills. An online survey was devised to understand the current level of BIM expertise and strategies of construction companies and their expectations. The survey invited national and regional U.S. construction companies with a presence in the mid-Atlantic area. The findings of this study support the fact that BIM is growing as an important component of construction operations and provide a benchmark to measure the evolution of BIM practice in construction firms over time and across different sectors. The study provides important insights that inform university construction curricular efforts.

It seeks to address the necessity forapplying BIM and re-organising the processes and roles in hospital building projects. This type of project is complex due to complicated functional and technical requirements, decision making involving a large number of stakeholders, and long-term development processes. Through desk research and referring to the ongoing European research project InPro, the framework for integrated collaboration and the use of BIM are analysed. Through several real cases, the changing roles of clients, architects, and contractors through BIM application are investigated. One of the main findings is the identification of the main factors for a successful collaboration using BIM, which can be recognised as “POWER”: product information sharing (P), organisational roles synergy (O), work processes coordination (W), environment for teamwork (E), and reference data consolidation (R). Furthermore, it is also found that the implementation of BIM in hospital building projects is still limited due to certain commercial and legal barriers, as well as the fact that integrated collaboration has not yet been embedded in the real estate strategies of healthcare institutions. This paper contributes to the actual discussion in science and practice on the changing roles and processes that are required to develop and operate sustainable buildings with the support of integrated ICT frameworks and tools. It presents the state-of-the-art of European research projects and some of the first real cases of BIM application in hospital building projects.

In this paper, we study the use of BIM in two life-cycle construction projects in Kuopio, Finland during 2011. The analysis of uses of BIM and their main problems will constitute a foundation for an intervention. We will focus on the following questions: (1) How different partners use the composite BIM model? (2) What are the major contradictions or problems in the BIM use? The preliminary findings reported in this study show that BIM has been adopted quite generally to design use but the old ways of collaboration seem to prevail, especially between designers and between designers and building sites. BIM has provided new means and demands for collaboration but expansive uses of BIM for providing new interactive processes across professional fields have not much come true.

With BIM technology, an accurate virtual model of a building is digitally constructed. This model, known as a building information model, can be used for planning, design, construction, and operation of the facility. It helps architects, engineers, and constructors visualize what is to be built in a simulated environment to identify any potential design, construction, or operational issues. BIM represents a new paradigm within AEC, one that encourages integration of the roles of all stakeholders on a project. In this paper, current trends, benefits, possible risks, and future challenges of BIM for the AEC industry are discussed. The findings of this study provide useful information for AEC industry practitioners considering implementing BIM technology in their projects.

The first is a paper outlining the seven prevailing problems that have emerged in the uptake of Building Information Modelling (BIM) in design practice.The paper provides a reality check between an idealistic view on BIM and the way it is currently applied in daily use. In order to reflect on the issues at hand, the author draws from three years of doctoral research in multidisciplinary design collaboration, followed by more than two years experience as Design Technology director in a large scale architecture practice. In addition to the above, his current role as the chair of the BIM and IPD Steering Group of the Australian Institute of Architects and Consult Australia exposes the author to a broad range of cultural implications of BIM.The findings presented here illustrate that, despite major advances in the development of BIM, there are predominantly cultural roadblocks to its implementation in practice.

The next CITA BIM Workshop is to be held on the 28th March and will explore the area of Social Cultural, Process Change Management, required for BIM Implementation. The keynote speaker for this workshop will be Ronan Collins who is the managing director of InteliBuild in Hong Kong. To register for this event please click on the link below

http://www.cita.ie/register.asp

Ronan will present the notion that the successful implementation of BIM requires three fundamental foundation blocks.

People = Project Leadership

Process = BIM Execution Planning

Power = Technology

The use of BIM can be at individual firm level. Architects and Engineers are using BIM for their own design and documentation. Main Contractors use BIM for construction planning. The implementation of BIM can also be on a Project wide basis or even specified at a governmental level. All of these scenarios require the 3P’s and each involves Social, Cultural & Process Change. Social Change in this context is an internal change and refers to the need for a collaborative shared environment. Cultural Change is caused by external forces such as governments and other groups. Process Change is at the core of successful BIM projects. We have to change the way we design, build & operate buildings.

The implementation of BIM on projects is a process and the successful adoption of BIM requires commitment, planning and resources. The speaker will show examples of how clients, architects, engineers and contractors have developed their understanding of BIM over the past five years. The Hong Kong Housing Authority, Airport Authority, Mass Transit Railway Corporation and other large public and private institutions are now specifying and requiring BIM on their projects.

The Hong Kong Institute of BIM has been established to recognize the qualifications and skills of BIM Project Managers and to establish standards, specifications and protocols for industry adoption of BIM. The Hong Kong Construction Industry Council, a statutory government body representing the construction industry has established an advisory group to provide a Government Strategy for the adoption of BIM in Hong Kong.

Throughout the Construction Stage much of this information is lost in translation and can result in critical data not being recorded in regards to equipment lists, product data sheets, warranties, etc. This is where the application of the Construction Operations Building Information Exchange (COBie) can be used to capture and record project handover data. The main focus of COBie is that the Owner, Operator and Occupier receives the information about the facility in as complete and as useful a form as possible.

The UK will be adopting the COBie application within their 5 year plan to adopt BIM into all Public Works Projects, as it delivers consistent and structured asset information that is useful to the Owner - Operator for post occupancy decision making. During the mobilisation stage of this plan COBie will be localised to support carbon related decision making to accommodate the requirements of public infrastructure owners.

The keynote speaker was David Philp who is is currently seconded to the Cabinet Office’s Efficiency and reform group and is the head of BIM implementation. Davids informative keynote speech detailed a number of key topics within the both the UK and Irish Construction Industry. A summary of David’s keynote speech is detailed below.

A report was commissioned by the UK Government that showed that the UK does not get full value from public sector construction. This key finding resulted in a the need for a new strategy that will enable the public sector to become a better client that is more informed and to replace adversarial cultures with collaborative ones. This innovative new procurement system involved the implementation of Building Information Modelling (BIM) on all Public Works Projects. BIM can provide the platform to provide “more for less” and is the catalyst to ensure that the areas of cost, time and carbon initiatives are provided with the tools for reform. This BIM model is to be chiefly used for open sharable asset information, which can be used to drive innovation in the supply chain and derive improvements across the board. In order for this to happen by 2016 it is critical that the industry is brought up to a level 2 standard, which is a BIM – File Based Collaboration and Library Management. The overall goal is to achieve a level 3 standard which would be an Integrated Web Service BIM Hub and full open process managed by a model server. The programme will consist of 20 packages to be implemented over a 5 phase delivery. In regards to the recording of data, COBie is the main tool been adopted, due to its practicality, as it uses, simple excel sheets to feed in the data. The overall goal is to provide digital recordings to the Facilities Management Team once the building is live, and to enable BIM to provide the platform for a structure to be “built better before built”. On conclusion it is suggested that Ireland should learn the lessons from the US in which the UK is currently doing, and, that we must start with the end in mind and know what questions we want answered. In order to do this we must “reset the default” and start now on the road to a brighter and more productive future.
